Ice

Ice is water frozen into a solid state. Depending on the presence of impurities such as particles of soil or bubbles of air, it can appear transparent or a more or less opaque bluish-white color.

In the Solar System, ice is abundant and occurs naturally from as close to the Sun as Mercury to as far as the Oort cloud. Beyond the Solar System, it occurs as interstellar ice. It is abundant on Earth's surface – particularly in the polar regions and above the snow line – and, as a common form of precipitation and deposition, plays a key role in Earth's water cycle and climate. It falls as snowflakes and hail or occurs as frost, icicles or ice spikes.

Ice molecules can exhibit up to sixteen different phases (packing geometries) that depend on temperature and pressure. When water is cooled rapidly (quenching), up to three different types of amorphous ice can form depending on the history of its pressure and temperature. When cooled slowly correlated proton tunneling occurs below 20 K giving rise to macroscopic quantum phenomena. Virtually all the ice on Earth's surface and in its atmosphere is of a hexagonal crystalline structure denoted as ice Ih (spoken as "ice one h") with minute traces of cubic ice denoted as ice Ic. The most common phase transition to ice Ih occurs when liquid water is cooled below 0°C (273.15K, 32°F) at standard atmospheric pressure. It may also be deposited directly by water vapor, as happens in the formation of frost. The transition from ice to water is melting and from ice directly to water vapor is sublimation.

Water (Martika song)

"Water" is the final single from Martika's self-titled debut, Martika. "Water" was never released as a single in the US, but peaked at number 59 on the UK Singles Chart in March 1990, and number 98 on the Australian ARIA singles chart in April 1990. The version released on the single was a remix of the album version, simply titled 7" remix.

"Water" is a song co-written and recorded by American country music singer Brad Paisley. It was released in March 2010 as the fourth single from his album American Saturday Night. The song first charted in 2009 as an album cut before its release to radio. Paisley wrote this song with Kelley Lovelace and Chris DuBois.

Content

In "Water," the narrator lists off various situations involving water: playing in a kiddie pool as a child, jumping from a rope swing with friends on a riverbank, and later wet t-shirt contests on spring break and skinny dipping with a girlfriend. He describes each situation as beginning a "love affair with Water."

Music video

The music video was directed by Jim Shea. It premiered on his website on April 15, 2010 and features Brad playing guitar in a pool and funny videos of people interacting with water.

Critical reception

Chris Neal of Country Weekly, in his review of the album, wrote that the song is "destined to be heard throughout the season at campouts and backyard parties" and that its theme made the album "first and foremost a summer album." Mario Tarradell of The Dallas Morning News cited the track as an example of Paisley's humor, saying that it did not "wear out [its] welcome the way 'Ticks' did."

Discovery (Shanice album)

Discovery is the debut studio album by American R&B/pop singer Shanice Wilson, released October 21, 1987 by A&M Records. Shanice at the time was fourteen years old with a very mature singing voice. Singer Teena Marie originally produced the majority of the album, but A&M Records felt the songs were too mature for her age. Bryan Loren was then chosen by A&M Records to produce new tracks that were used for the album. The singles "(Baby Tell Me) Can You Dance," and "No 1/2 Steppin'" were top 10 R&B hits. "The Way You Love Me," and "I'll Bet She's Got A Boyfriend" were the final singles from the album.

Smooth jazz singer Will Downing covered the song "Just a Game" on his 1995 album Moods.

Discovery (1602 ship)

Discovery or Discoverie was a small 20-ton, 38 foot (12 m) long "fly-boat" of the British East India Company, launched before 1602. The ship was one of three that participated in the voyage that led to the founding of Jamestown, Virginia.

History

Discovery was the smallest of three ships that were led by Captain Christopher Newport on the voyage that resulted in the founding of Jamestown in the new Colony of Virginia in 1607. When Captain Newport returned to London, England, he left Discovery behind for the use of the colonists.

She took part in six expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage. During the 1610-1611 expedition in the Canadian arctic, the crew of Discovery mutinied, and set their captain Henry Hudson adrift in a small boat; he was not seen again, and the crew returned to England.

Replicas

Replicas of Discovery and her sisters, the larger Susan Constant and Godspeed, are docked in the James River at Jamestown Settlement (formerly Jamestown Festival Park), adjacent to the Jamestown National Historic Site. A new Discovery, built in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, was launched in September 2006.

Anagnorisis

Anagnorisis (/ˌænəɡˈnɒrᵻsᵻs/; Ancient Greek: ἀναγνώρισις) is a moment in a play or other work when a character makes a critical discovery. Anagnorisis originally meant recognition in its Greek context, not only of a person but also of what that person stood for. Anagnorisis was the hero's sudden awareness of a real situation, the realisation of things as they stood, and finally, the hero's insight into a relationship with an often antagonistic character in Aristotelian tragedy.

Tragedy

In his Poetics, as part of his discussion of peripeteia, Aristotle defined anagnorisis as "a change from ignorance to knowledge, producing love or hate between the persons destined by the poet for good or bad fortune" (1452a). It is often discussed along with Aristotle's concept of catharsis.

In the Aristotelian definition of tragedy, it was the discovery of one's own identity or true character (e.g. Cordelia, Edgar, Edmund, etc. in Shakespeare's King Lear) or of someone else's identity or true nature (e.g. Lear's children, Gloucester's children) by the tragic hero.
